    I have been using dawjee to analyze search terms for a while now - toying with keyword suggestions and looking for interesting patterns or anomalies in the result data (e.g. pages with query string data often report an erroneous Google Page Rank of zero).

    After discussing some findings with a colleague, I realised a lot of what I’m learning will also be of use and/or interest to other webmasters. I shall therefore catalogue all future findings in a series of articles / blog posts.

    This first article shall observe the current Google results for the term “dandruff”.

    At the of writing, the top 3 results are:

    Position 1

    PR 6

    Position 2

    Title: Dandruff - MayoClinic.com

    PR 4

    Position 3

    Title: Dandruff

    (PR = Google Page Rank)

    What’s interesting is that P2 (Position 2) has a lower PR (Google Page Rank) than P3 (Position 3). Both web pages contain Dandruff in their TITLE tags and urls. So a cursory glance would suggest that P3 should have a better (i.e. lower) rank than P2.

    From taking a look at both pages, both are on topic and contain genuine information about dandruff. P2 is only a small page, and is part of a full article (i.e. many small interlinked dandruff pages). While P3 is a full article on a single page.

    The keyword densities are 4.86% for P2 and 6.39% for P3. Neither page makes obvious use of contrived keyword stuffing.

    However, if we drill down into the data for each result (use the small magnifying glass next to each result, or follow the link the Resources list below), we’ll find some significant differences in their hosts and backlinks.

    P2 has 6 Google backlinks, with 4,990 to its host. While P3 has 3 and 270 respectively.

    P2 also dwarfs P3 in terms of the number of pages Google has indexed (Pages in Host), and also has a higher host page rank 7 (vs 5 for P3).

    To summarize, P2 may have a lower page rank, but it has a few more links and its home page is overwhelmingly more popular than P3’s. It is also part of a set of pages about dandruff. Instead of having the full article on a single page, it has been split among many. P2 therefore has several interlinked pages about dandruff.

    It therefore appears that the pages hosted on popular (in terms of search engines) web sites can rank better than other pages, even if they have lower Google Page ranks. Splitting up articles into many small pages helps as well.

    Recently I was asked to produce a music video for an unknown artist out of the UK. The video was to be shot in Las Vegas and to look something like the old U2 video with Bono interacting with crowds outside the various casinos. I thought the filming would be pretty straight forward, you know, hand-held camera, available light from the casino and a small army of Production Assistants with talent releases for the crowds. However, like so many times in my career this production became more than what it was sold to be.

    I was sent to Vegas, a day before the director and artist arrived from the UK. After they landed we were meant to spend the first evening determining the best casinos to use for the shoot. The locations had to have the right kind of lighting, traffic flow and most importantly no big advertising in the windows or nearby surrounding buildings. MTV won’t allow an artist to sing their song while standing in front of Starbucks - even if it’s in the background - because it may offend some of their advertising clients and in some cases could be against FCC rules.

    But all was not to be worried about. When the UK team arrived the concept of the video had changed. They’d decided that the U2 style video had been done and that we needed to take a road trip to Monument Valley, UT and film various elements of the trip along the way. Usually big adjustments like this cost an artist/record company lots of money to cancel crew etc. On this occasion, we were able to make the necessary crew adjustments and use the remaining budget for a 15 passenger van and gas. The artist’s management and record company fully supported the director and artist in this new direction, especially since it didn’t cost them an additional nickel.

    The next morning ten of us, including the artist, loaded into the passenger van and left Las Vegas in our rearview mirror.

    Believe it or not, the trip to Monument Valley via a passenger van is not a direct route. There’s a really large canyon in the way forcing those who choose to drive to go around it. I’m of course referring to the Grand Canyon. One can drive north on interstate 15 and turn right at the Harrisburg Junction, just past St. George, UT and then follow highway 59 to Colorado City where it becomes 389 to Fredonia where you’d go south on highway 89 Past Marble Canyon to east 160 which takes you to Monument Valley but it’s the long way to go and you miss the opportunity to see one of the worlds greatest views.

    We decided to travel south on highway 93 to interstate 40 East to Williams, AZ where we’d go north on highway 64 to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Along the way we’d stop to film if the scenery warranted a rest and/or we felt like it. We shot our artist walking on the side of the highway outside of Kingman, AZ, which of course is part of the famous route 66 pilgrimage that hundreds of people take annually. From there we hopped on the interstate and found little interest in stopping as most of the exits are corporate stucco nightmares. If you look carefully though, the desert beyond these blights on the landscape is really beautiful.

    Once we turned north on highway 64 the scenery became much more palatable as the tall desert grasses grow close to the road and the desert sage slowly gives way to scrub oak and ponderosa pine.

    The Brits had never seen such wide expanses and were mesmerized by the shear beauty of the desert. After nearly an entire day on the road with a few pit stops and a couple roadside shots we arrived at the south rim of the Grand Canyon just in time for sunset. This of course is one of two popular times to view the awesome sight so maneuvering our van around the hundreds of motor homes and camping trailers was a bit of a challenge but once we were parked we hot footed it to the cliff edge to watch the sun drop over the Colorado River’s greatest work. Neither the artist or the director were interested in filming this event because they wanted to enjoy it. We did take lots of photographs.

    Once the sunset was complete we realized we had another several hundred miles to cover in the dark to make it to Monument Valley. So back to the van and on the road we went. With no light to shoot with I was able to settle in for the long drive to Kayenta, AZ where we’d made reservations at the local Holiday Inn. We made it in good time and settled in for a good nights rest.

    As the sun rose the following morning we piled into our vehicle and drove the few miles north to our ultimate destination. The buttes of the valley appear on the horizon as you approach but their full spectacular prominence is not revealed until you enter the park. A short stop at the visitor center to fill up on water and check in with the ranger to make sure our film permit was in order and then we were off on the 17 mile dirt road that winds through the park.

    As we drove down the road from the entrance the director had flashbacks to Back to the Future III while the artist recognized it for the Playstation 3 game Motorstorm. Even though we had the air conditioner on the heat from the Valley floor was penetrating the sides of the van and we all reminded one another to stay hydrated.

    After several miles of bouncing along we came to one of America’s most picturesque places, John Ford’s Point. This of course was made famous for the many John Wayne westerns and was our first shot in a video that never got played on the air. We shot in the pristine dunes just below John’s point, we filmed the three sisters and looked through the north window. Our camera shot the east and west mittens, panned the spire of the totem pole and finished with a performance under the thumb. It was a beautiful day with no one collapsing in the heat or any camera difficulties due to dust and sand and all along we thought we were making true art.

    Upon returning to Los Angeles via the long route discussed earlier - that’s another story - we learned that artist had been dropped from the record label and that the video would be shelved until further notice. We were all disappointed but still remember the paid trip to Monument Valley.

    Researchers at the University of Sydney had students eat a 240 calorie portion of a variety of foods. The students then rated their hunger feelings every 15 minutes for two hours. The idea was to see what food kept them satisfied the longest. White bread was given a baseline rating of 100. A food more satisfying then white bread would be rated higher then 100. One surprising fact was that the more fat a food contained the least satisfying it was. The higher the number the more satisfying the food.

    The most satisfying food was a boiled potato. It rated a 323. That means that the potato is 3 times more satisfying than white bread. For you dieters don’t ruin the potato with butter and sour cream. Add salt and pepper a bit of olive oil instead. Chose a boiled or baked potato over french fries which scored a 116. Believe it or not, fish rated second with 225 rating. Fish will keep you full longer than a juicy steak (188). Oatmeal (209) is more satisfying than corn flakes (118). Some foods that ranked below white bread were Mars candy bar (70), ice cream (96) and worst of all was the croissant at 47. Eat a croissant and in short time your hunger will return full force.

    Chief researcher Dr. Susanne Holt stated, “Beans and lentils, for example, contain anti-nutrients which delay their absorption so they make you feel full for longer. Roughly speaking, the more fiber, protein and water a food contains, the longer it will satisfy, but you have to look at each foodstuff individually and that is why we think our index will be so useful.”

    Jelly beans came in with 118 rating. Anyone who has eaten too much Halloween candy can understand the reasoning behind this rating. “I suspect the reason that the jellybeans came out so well was that they made our volunteers feel slightly nauseous,” said Dr Holt. Oranges and apples rated 202 and 197 respectively. Remember that it takes quite a few apples and oranges to reach 240 calories when compared to other calorie dense foods.

The company who is making the offer will ship and give you the item if you provide accurate information and take advantage of offers they let you pick from. The basic idea is you sign up for a certain amount of offers and than they give you a incentive item for doing so.

    The offers

    The offers range from free trials, purchases, or items that you just pay for the shipping. They will show you list of offers and you have to pick so many of each type. The company may qualify the offers as silver, gold, and platinum offers. The number of offers you have to complete can range from one offer to as many as twenty four. Some are even higher than that. They may even require you to get three to eighteen people to take advantage of this free item. In other words they ask you to enlist your friends.

    The time it takes to confirm

    It can take up to 8 weeks for the company to confirm each offer you signed up for. Before they will ship your item they must confirm that you actually completed each offer. If your going to take advantage of any of these make sure you read the fine print.

    The problems

    The companies making these offers can make it as easy or as difficult as possible to complete these offers. This can take time and money. In the long run you could be spending a lot more time and money in order to get something free than to just out right buy it. The companies may require you to submit documentation and credit card statements showing offers completed. Companies do not pay for an item the same as you would to buy it retail. The actual value may be higher or lower than the items worth.

    Their plan is that some will give up and not follow the completion of the item being offered for free. For them its a numbers game cause they know not all people will spend their time and money to complete 20 some offers to get a free Ipod. The average offers they ask you complete is around 6. If each offer cost you $10 to complete they just made $60. The advertiser pays them advertising and extending the offers. Normally the advertising dollar is even higher than the cash outlay you make. The reason this is true if you have ever taken advantage of an offer lets say that costs you $2 and by completing it you make $20 imagine how much they are making on each offer.

    If you find an free item being offered to you and want to take advantage of it. Make sure you read all the fine print before you lay out any money. If the offer sounds to good to be true it probably is.

    Have you ever wondered what it means to be incorporated? If
    it’s really worth the time and money…. and anyway, just
    how much time or money might it cost? Is it for me or my
    business? How do I do it? And lastly, why haven’t I heard
    about this before?

    Well, the chances are you HAVE heard about it, but what you
    heard scared you off, or was erroneous. Until now, maybe you
    have not even done any personal research. You picked up a
    rumor or hint or innuendo here or there.. but that’s about
    all. No ACTIVE pursuit.. and again, probably because what
    you heard may have just discouraged you from even spending
    time on the subject.

    Well, congratulations. You are finally at a place you can
    start comfortably.

    Why do I write about those circumstances? Because I lived
    them, and to my extreme self disappointment, did not take
    the matters into my own hands to investigate.

    I’ve been a small, one person, self employed business for 17
    years.. and was NOT incorporated. You know, growing up,
    money and things like this just didn’t get discussed in my
    family. Not that it carried any stigma like sex or the
    like.. my folks just didn’t know. When I went to college,
    and even though I was an Economics “major”, it didn’t get
    covered in any of the classes. I sort of just emerged or
    morphed into being in business and never was big (or smart
    enough) to have a business advisor. I had an accountant, and
    he was good at keeping me compliant with IRS rules for the
    entrepreneurship type business I was in. I guess he figured
    I’d made a choice not to be incorporated.. my business
    structure was not his business; his business was keeping me
    compliant with the rules set forth for the business I was
    in. My principals (I was a manufacturers’ rep) probably
    figured I knew what I was doing, and anyway, as long as I
    was selling their products. what did they care. Then there’s
    my competitors… even the friendly ones.. or the guys at
    the Chamber of Commerce meetings. Like they care.. right? ?
    ?

    But one day, in spite of myself, I did stumble into a good
    reference book, and it opened my eyes as big as dinner
    plates.

    I learned that a small company (revenues less than $75,000,
    mainly commissions) COULD incorporate and do so
    professionally for under $1000; that if I had previously
    been incorporated (LLC or Chapter S), I could have paid
    about half as much in taxes as I did over the 17 years I’d
    been doing just a Schedule C, plus I’d have had far less
    liability.

    Once I learned that this was possible, I started to go about
    learning how and where.. and this can make a difference.

    It seems like the two best states are Delaware and Nevada,
    and Nevada has an edge because of state taxes.

    And by the way, your local attorney or accountant unless
    licensed in those states is probably not going to be your
    best source of help or information, and certainly not the
    lowest in costs.

    If you were to start your research on the Internet, you’ll
    soon discover your next problem.. how to choose. You must be
    very careful here. There are firms that will sell you
    services for money you really don’t need to spend, even if
    they deliver all the services. There are those who will seem
    to be real bargains at $300 or less.. but you get very
    little. The facts are you can get the forms and paperwork
    free from most states.. but not the “go with” guidance.. and
    if you are doing it yourself, you want some help.

    The point: choose and evaluate carefully. If you do, you’ll
    probably find yourself using the services of a mid-
    competitive-price service and you will get good value. You
    CAN do this yourself with a service.. and you’ll be amazed
    how much you can save and benefit.

    Don’t do as I did for many years and ignore it or feel it
    can’t be done. NOW is the time to begin and stop overpaying
    taxes.

    A few years ago I got into a conversation with cab driver in Toronto. I was surprised to learn that the driver, an immigrant from India, had been unable to find work in his profession during his five years in Canada. His qualifications from universities in both the UK and India, included a Ph.D. All of his qualifications were recognized in Canada. The problem he ran into was a lack of Canadian job experience. Despite being interviewed over twenty times for a position he was repeatedly given the thumbs down. This anecdote along with similar stories I have come across in the media, are fairly commonplace these days.

    Immigrants arrive in Canada buoyed with high hopes, intent of giving of their best. How come then so many qualified immigrants end up in low end jobs, some even on the unemployment rolls? How come a high percentage end up leaving, returning home or moving to another immigrant destination?

    There is a critical doctor shortage in Canada, something health professionals and administrators have long been complaining about. There are good sized communities in Canada without a doctor. In some cities the doctor shortage has compelled patients to resort to emergency departments or clinics in order to find help. One study predicts that come 2011, Canada may be short as many as 6,000 doctors. The shortfall isn’t only related to GP’s but also to specialists in areas such as obstetrics, radiology and anesthesiology. It’s an acute and growing problem.

    Red tape and entrenched regulations are part of the challenge faced by immigrant doctors. Canadian Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons require all graduating doctors to complete a residency of two years or more. While many immigrant doctors are fully qualified, their residency stints in their homelands don’t count since only Canadian and American residencies are accepted. So you have situations where highly qualified individuals are compelled to work in a fast food joint or clean floors, because they find it next to impossible to get a residency.

    Foreign trained doctors are quite literally caught on the horns of a dilemma. In order to be eligible for residency they have to have at least a year of medical practice behind them … but in order to practice in Canada they have to have residency. It is in fact a classic Catch-22
    scenario.

    It’s surprising this problem has been allowed to get to this point. Quite aside from the importance of doing the right thing by new immigrants, there are also economic benefits to Canada that would accrue with more active recruitment of immigrant doctors. It would save provincial taxpayers a whack of cash since they wouldn’t be paying toward the cost of educating as many medical professionals. Concerns about maintaining standards are important, but the assumption that foreign standards don’t match up is overblown, especially given the advances in clinical care with the greater availability of medical technology.

    The whole process needs to be fast-tracked. Most importantly, the residency hurdle needs to be quickly addressed by recognizing foreign residencies (other than American) that meet provincial standards, so that these valuable individuals aren’t left to languish in the wings.

    Qualified immigrants in the US seem to fare better when it comes to finding work in their field. The American “melting pot” approach is a great equalizer in certain respects. There has been the suggestion that Canadian employers who cite “lack of experience” or other in-house regulations as reasons for turning down immigrant applicants are in effect practicing cloaked discrimination, and even racism. There are also claims that some professional sectors have for want of a better term a sort of ‘old boys’ club’ mentality and exercise a form of protectionism when it comes to hiring protocols. If this is in fact going on in some cases, all the more reason for the government to act in order to ensure that red tape isn’t being used as an artificial barrier to discriminate against immigrant applicants on the basis of their race or cultural heritage.

    In this era of international trade, both Canada and the US have reciprocal trading relationships with other nations. The outsourcing of operations to countries in Asia is an example of this. When you consider this new economic relationship together with the high sounding words of praise the Canadian government routinely lavishes on new immigrants and the skills they offer, it is becoming increasingly unacceptable that these employment anomalies are being swept under the rug. At least the Tories have undertaken a $3 million dollar study to try and get to the roots of the problem. Let’s hope it results in some real action.

    The Canada I know is about fair play and decency, and that ethic should be extended to all Canadian job seekers irrespective of origin.

    What is an entrepreneur? You know, you see them all the time, the guy with the great idea who is quick on his feet. Next thing you know, he has turned that idea into a fast moving product you notice on the shelf at your local store. This person is great to work for. The entrepreneur is so energetic and full of enthusiasm, full of quick answers to get the business ball rolling. The entrepreneur is filled with a passion and drive for his company.

    What happens to so many of these exciting entrepreneurs as their ideas take shape, take off - their business grows faster than they can handle. They find themselves short of a very important resource - qualified management assistance. This happens for several reasons:

    1. “I’ll hire competent (expensive) help once I get some return on my investment” or

    2. “I’ll train those young, enthusiastic people who were here in the beginning - maybe they can handle managing the business” or

    3. ” I’m not sure what all the fuss is about, I only need someone to count the money and pay the bills - I can do everything else myself!”

    Whichever the case, or maybe its all of the above, the entrepreneur will sell the business short as they avoid the hiring of competent managers in many facets of the business.

    In all cases that entrepreneur is the boss; he is the one with the ideas and the money. If you don’t want to work for one, you can put the money up and become one yourself. Why do I say this? I say this because you have to respect the person who is willing to put up their own funds to bring their idea to fruition. That level of respect is necessary for you to begin to do the right job for this type of employer.

    Now, you could be working for a corporation that is managed by a Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, President, as well as a long list of upper management staff with titles such as Vice President of Operations, Chief Operating Officer, Director of Administration and on and on and on. Sometimes these organizations seem very top heavy, but if you belong to one, everyone seems so busy attending meetings, creating reports and directing projects.

    Does this mean all these positions are necessary? Maybe yes and maybe no. How can you tell? How can you impact this organization in such a way as to eliminate waste while not upsetting the delicate balance that is that Company’s culture? In this case the corporate culture can be buried in bureaucracy, paperwork, meetings to discuss the structure of meetings, documentation to support the documentation and if you are lucky, a product line that somehow sells itself in spite of the corporate overhead and overwhelmingly slow moving progress.

    Passion for the “mission” is hard to find in many large corporate environments. If you are looking for a challenge or to make a difference, the corporate executive who sets the culture may not be ready for all that upheaval. Be ready for change to occur slowly and your dedication can and will be tested.

    So, keep your focus no matter what personality you work for, the structured CEO or the wildcat entrepreneur. The focus is on quality, knowledge, a high level of interpersonal skills and the most important; the highest level of integrity.

    Once you understand the environment, you can and will be ready to face the challenge.

    Music From Around the World

    Kasai Masai was one of 16 groups to perform at the 11th annual Rainforest World Music Festival held at Santabong near Kuching, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Performers came from Gambia, Greece, Poland, the UK, Palestine, India, Trinidad & Tobago, Philippines, Portugal, Japan and from Malaysia. Some played traditional music, others original compositions, and there was the beautiful blending of the old with the new. “They even play hip hop,” moaned the manager of youth band Kani’d that plays traditional music from Central Borneo.

    Biswasjit ‘Bonnie’ Chakraborty, headman of Oikyotaan, a group based in Chennai, India, would never be caught playing hip hop. “We are playing music that is 500 years old, so we don’t want to play sugary renditions of songs that have come down from that time. It is very important to us that we keep the aesthetic value intact.”

    1000 Harmonious Notes

    Chakraborty sees the music as bringing people, and indeed the universe, together: “We see our music as bringing harmony in confluence. We have a saying that 1,000 notes come together to make one song.” The music of Oikyotaan, which was a big hit with the Rainforest audience, is very much about breaking down barriers of caste, religion and culture to make a more harmonious world.

    While Bonnie was very serious about his music, mandolin player Jan Kubek of the Polish group Beltaine had a very different perspective about the music he plays. “It is just for fun!” he enthused. Asked why a Polish group plays Celtic music, he replied, “Polish music is very sleepy. So if you want to dance and have fun, you have to look to music outside of Poland for that. For us, the Irish, Scottish, Celtic music is fun!”

    However, Jan did admit that music is not only fun, but serves a deeper purpose. “The Russians have a saying: ‘If you play music, you can’t think bad.’”

    High Expectations Were Met

    Nobody was thinking bad, even when the rain descended on Friday night. “We set an attendance record for Friday nights,” noted Benedict Jimbau, Chairman of the Organising Committee, “despite the rain.” Prior to this, it had only rained once through an entire evening performance in the ten years of the Festival.

    “Expectations are very high,” Benedict said before RWMF began, and throughout the three days, those expectations were met as could be seen from the enthusiasm of the audience.

    People showed their appreciation and energised the performers with their loud expressions, dancing and calling for more at the end of every set. From the main stage the Voodoo King told the steaming crowd; “Don’t tell anyone this, I’m telling you this in confidence - the Rainforest Music Festival is the number one music festival in the world!” Most of the musicians told the audience that they were the best they’d ever performed for.

    We Need the Music!

    When Randy Raine-Reusch conceived the idea of doing the festival, one of his goals was to reintroduce the people of Borneo to their own music. Through the 1970s and ’80s, the traditional music of the indigenous people was ignored and was in danger of being totally forgotten. Thanks, in part, to RMWF, young people are once again taking up the instruments and playing the music of their ancestors.

    Kani’d (meaning ‘cousins’) consists of 12 teenagers who have been inspired by the ancestral songs of the Kelabits from Central Borneo. They draw upon the wealth of the musical and dancing traditions of the Orang Ulu tribes along the Baram River. They have learned original compositions from their grandparents, uncles and aunts that have evolved into dynamic improvisations and arrangements of traditional styles bridging the ancient and the contemporary.

    “We are one of the smallest cultural groups in Sarawak,” says the group’s manager Nikki Lugun. “There are only 4,000 of us. There are 4,500 orangutans. We are all fighting for survival.”

    A Unifying Force

    One advantage the Kelabits have is their music. “Our music has been passed down from generation to generation, but it skipped our parents. Now we are trying to revive it. It is the music of the community. It is the music of celebration when the head hunters came back victorious; it is lullabies, it is love songs, it is songs of mourning.

    “We will pass the music on to our children, and we hope that it will be a unifying focus not only for our people, but for our tribe and for all people.”

    Hisoshi Motofuji, a Taiko player from Japan, admitted that his drumming “is accepted by people, but I can’t say it influences them. What I can say is that it unites them.” And unite them it did as the audience responded to the power of his drumming.

    Music Shouldn’t be a Steamroller

    Adel Salameh and the Ross Daly Quartet offered something completely different, appealing to an audience who appreciate beauty and complexity to their music. Of Irish descent, group leader Ross Daly plays a variety of Eastern music on a number of different instruments.

    The diversity of the performers at the RWMF playing cultural music appealed to him. “The mainstream music industry is not interested in culture. What they want to do is make one kind of music that they can sell to the whole world. Music shouldn’t be a steamroller to make us all the same. Modern technology offers us the opportunity to come together while retaining our individuality.”

    Old Timey & Bizarre

    And as different as they could be was the New Rope String Band. Pete Challoner said their music is very hard to describe. “It is a big assortment of things and all sorts of hoe-down, pan-Celtic, old timey, up-beat down home music. All this combined with bizarre physical nonsense and clowning about. And singing. And dancing.”

    Using their fiddles to play musical ping pong with the notes, they gave reality to Ross Daly’s comment “Music exists everywhere in our world, but, for the most part, we unfortunately don’t hear it.”

    It is difficult to hear the music from the many corners of the world, and even their home countries’ musicians are not always appreciated. After getting a hugely enthusiastic response from the audience, vocalist and electric guitar player for Fadomorse, admitted that at home in Portugal, they are not very well known. “We are not famous there: we are just another band among many who play similar music.”

    Diminutive Dynamite

    Coming from the Philippines, where everyone and their ‘bruised chicken’ sings, Pinikpikan might have an equally difficult time making an impression, but Carol Rodriguez Bello, noted for her primal Manabo singing style, does. ‘Diminutive but dynamite’ comes close to describing the power of her performance.

    Sammy Asuncion, Pinikpikan’s front man and lead guitarist, says, “She’s a natural. Even in the Philippines she stands out. She is eerie.”

    New Events

    Adding to the festivities this year were two new events: the World Craft Bazaar and the Folk Art Forum and Exhibition that drew good crowds, as they not only got to look at how some of the crafts are made; they were able to purchase local and imported crafts from the likes of Kyrgystan, Japan and other countries.

    “It is a beautiful blend of music and cultures,” said Gracie Geikie, Co-chairman of the Organising Committee and CEO of Sarawak Tourism Board. This is a tourism-driven event which brings people from many countries in Asia Pacific as well as some from Canada, the United States and the UK. “From our tracking, we had people coming from 36 countries,” Gracie stated.

    The official attendance numbers showed record-breaking first and second nights, with 22,573 attending over the three days. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, and First Lady, Datin Sri Jeanne Abdullah joined the Saturday night crowds.

    A Sublime Setting

    The Sarawak Cultural Village is a delightful setting for RWMF, with traditional native buildings serving in many capacities, from food and drink venues to hosting the afternoon workshops where the audience can get up close to the performers who provide insight into their music. Packed houses were often the result.

    People lounged along the walkways and at the food venues and watched the performances on big screens that made being in front of the stage not a necessity for enjoying the festival.

    An Eye-Opener

    The organisers urged the visitors from all those countries to take the time to see more of Sarawak and meet the people who are ‘warm and welcoming’. Not only is the festival a great audience draw; the festival has become a great attraction for the performers, as the Committee had 462 applications for 14 slots on the programme.

    Kasai Masai’s manager, Andy Richardson, was enthusiastic not only about the event and the great show the group put on, but about Asia. “This is a real eye-opener,” he stated. “It is a beautiful place, the audience has been superb, the organisation has been great. It has really been a terrific time. I would really like to come back here again.”
