I struggle to put what I believe is an extremely diverse group of individuals in one bucket and paint them with a single, broad brush. But because the common practice has become to call them “Gen Y” or the “Millennium Workforce,” we’ll address them as such in this article.

Think about what defines this group. Most surveys suggest that they want to work faster and better than their peers. In particular, many seek assignments with clear set goals and manageable deadlines. But there are also some dangerous trends emerging such as the assumption that they are ready for a far greater level of responsibility than they realistically are on their first day on the job.

As Rod Beckstrom writes in his book, The Starfish and the Spider, the traditional pre-WWI command and control organizational structure is simply too much of my grandfather’s mentality for this group. Many tend to have a very short attention span. They get restless quickly, and similar to the notion of “if they don’t like your movie, they can get up and leave,” they are likely to do the same with any job.

Bruce Tulgan, author of Managing the Generation Mix, says Gen Y “is like Gen X on steroids. They walk in with high expectations for themselves, their boss, and their employer. If you thought you saw a clash when Gen X came into the workforce that was the fake punch. The haymaker is coming now.”

So how do you supervise, lead, and approach this next generation of high potentials? In our experience, many are particularly bright and ambitious, but also have a “spoiled brat” mentality. Technology is very much in their DNA. They seek instant gratification and thrive on challenging much of what their older peers believe to be best practices.

A particularly unique characteristic of this group is their command of technology and the fundamental belief that anyone who doesn’t embrace the absolute bleeding edge of technology will simply be left behind.

This future fabric of the workforce is the fastest growing segment of the labor pool and, to many, they are clear trendsetters in the transformation of organizations of all types, size, industry and geographic presence.

We believe their hardwiring is unique as evidenced by their ability to electronically multi-task via platforms such as Google, instant messaging, and texting. They possess multi-processing skills that even the generation before them could not envision.

Our summer interns typically have 10-15 blogs open at a time. They text constantly and leverage multiple social networking sites. One could easily perceive all of this as wasting time and resources when, in fact, they are getting things done. They just happen to do it very differently than the rest of us.

Many are developing a canny ability to solve problems quickly yet, in our experience, they struggle when faced with an interpersonal, face-to-face confrontational situation. They prefer distance in disagreement. Additionally, many view senior leaders as antiquated due largely to their inability to “speak the language.” This lack of communication ultimately creates an even bigger divide.

So, what is the answer? Here are some helpful tips:

1. Recognize the need to deliberately, intentionally transform much of your preconceived notions around work hours, processes, and even deadlines and budgets. Find a way to channel their energy and develop a work environment similar to the social networks or online environments that they have grown up with. By doing this, you are likely to enable them to perform at their absolute peaks.

2. Proactively embrace Web 2.0 technologies as business enablers. This includes podcasts, blogging, v-logging (video logging), RSS, and many others that we have yet to fully uncover or truly embrace such as Second Life for training and development.

3. Consider new communication channels as an opportunity to engage in dialog. Only by changing the media models, without losing the organization’s leaders’ core values, will you be able to substitute give-and-take dialog for the traditional, “tossing a message over the wall to see what sticks” approach.

4. The evolution of the corporate culture will require the development of highly interactive solutions for attracting, developing and to the extent possible, retaining this talent pool. As I mentioned in a recent Entrepreneur magazine article, ideas such as recruiting videos, informal online mentoring, virtual 360-degree assessments, personal and professional competency mapping and capabilities development are some of the ideas that will help you achieve the necessary generational equilibrium.

5. Foster creativity and enhance productivity by providing tools that promote mobility and convergence. Think: remote access, Blackberries, SaaS (Software as a Service), and video if not virtual conferencing. One of our clients, a law firm, recently completely abandoned desktop computers and has armed its employees with laptops and a generous reimbursement policy for home equipment as well as truly flexible hours. By choosing to emphasize the end result, they have been extremely successful. Their fastest growing workforce is stay-at-home moms.

By staying current with the evolutionary technology landscape, the incoming generation of workers begins to believe that leadership not only has the ability to listen, but also the much more critical willingness to adapt.

From the website for something called the “Billion Soul Initiative,”
Dr. James O. Davis writes, under the headline, “Birth of a Vision”:
“It was 2001, and Dr. Bill Bright (founder of Campus Crusade for
Christ) was about to make the first public announcement of a brand
new goal. To get to Springfield, he had flown on a private plane
because of a debilitating illness. As he climbed the stairs, wheezing
through oxygen tubes…the Presbyters broke the silence with a
standing ovation for the greatest soul-winner of the modern era.

“Just six months earlier…, I left a meeting in that same building with
a prayer in my heart for God’s vision to be fulfilled. During the short
drive home, the Holy Spirit whispered, “Call Bill Bright now and
tell him what I have put in your heart.” Grabbing my cell phone, I
placed the call… Within an hour, Dr. Bright called and asked, “James,
what is on your heart?” I told him my burden for pastors worldwide.
Through my evangelistic work, I had learned that more than 90% of all
ministers worldwide have no formal education. Tens of thousands
drop out of ministry each year. And nearly every week, I was with
another great pastor, listening to the challenges he faced. This helped
develop my love for pastors that I have to this day.

“Dr. Bright and I worked hard, building a network for a billion soul
harvest. Long before we organized a corporation, we traveled
nationwide together, challenging leaders to take the long look instead
of the short look. When we weren’t traveling, we were in Dr. Bright’s
home, hosting “Breakfast with Bill” meetings, casting vision with
pastors from every state and stream of Christianity.

“…After we prayed together, I looked into his eyes for the last time and
told this great leader that when I saw him next, in Heaven, I would
testify that I was faithful to the vision and that more than one billion
people were saved. Eight days later, Dr. Bright graduated to receive
his eternal reward.”

EYE-OPENING SUNDAY BREAKFAST

I was at a breakfast in Irving, Texas last Tuesday, June 19, 2007, and
heard Dr. Davis speak. He introduced the keynote speaker, Pastor
Sunday Adelaja, a Nigerian-born pastor of a Ukrainian church with
35,000 members and 500 “daughter” churches all over the world.

As a 25-year marketing veteran, having worked with DFW Ad-Agencies
and two award-winning Chambers of Commerce, I was not surprised to
see how Pastor Sunday was drawn immediately (and vice versa) to
America’s MegaChurches, our high-profile ministries, and to the Trinity
Broadcasting Network for the official “roll-out” of his “product”;
HOWEVER, I was saddened to see how the nation’s burgeoning House
Church/Simple Church movement was not represented at all among the
ministries who are aligning themselves with Pastor Sunday’s mission.

I am very active in strengthening and discipling those within the House
Church/Simple Church movement – as well as those throughout the Body
of Christ worldwide - with an online ministry that has reached millions
since 1999. Regarding this movement, Researcher/Sociologist George
Barna says it includes 43 million affiliates each month, NOT including
cell groups. Over 70 MILLION Americans claim to have taken part in
House Church. That’s alot of Christians!

Since attending Pastor Sunday’s breakfast, I have been speaking with
several men whom we in the Simple Church would call the “leaders”
of our movement (trust me, you WOULD recognize their names), each
of which informed me that they had actually attended the initial
meetings of the Billion Soul Initiative. Though I refer to these brothers
as “leaders,” they would surely acknowledge that the Holy Spirit is the
ONLY leader within The Church. These men were incredibly easy to
access and are wonderful examples to multitudes within the movement.

Each man expressed to me a willingness to NETWORK and brainstorm
with Pastor Sunday and any other high-profile leaders within the
Institutional Church. What is the Institutional Church going to do with
the willingness and wisdom of these incredible men? Though these
godly individuals are well worth talking to, each one expressing a
willingness to gather with Pastor Sunday or any other MegaChurch Pastors,
I fear that, because there are no names or faces associated with the
impressive House Church/Simple Church numbers, some folks don’t tend
to take this “movement” quite as seriously as they should.

My advice?

Take it seriously.

What may still be below radar today will be the Church most Americans
will be a part of in 10-15 years.

Count on it.

I met at least 10 House Church attendees at Pastor Sunday’s breakfast
that day. In fact, a man I had not previously met invited me just the night
before the breakfast. He was looking for a House Churcher in Texas
and contacted House2House Ministries when he was directed to me.
I had no intention of attending the breakfast - too short of a notice -
until the Lord spoke to me later as I was getting ready for bed, “I want
you to go and meet your brother.”

Frankly, I’m STILL wondering WHO that “brother” was/is.

FAITHFUL TO WHO’S VISION?

Following are excerpts regarding Dr. Bright and what he had to say
about the Billion Soul Initiative in relation to the house church model.
Please read them, ponder them and pray. As I read them myself, I could not
help but wonder what Dr. Bright meant by his use of the term “house
churches” and why his vision seems to have evolved to referring to
MegaChurches - a model that is statistically failing - and the “Christian
elite” - a common tendency resulting from our habit of equating large
numbers with success - that fails time and time again leaving a trail of
shipwrecked faith in its wake. We should know better yet, it’s our
Adamic nature to react this way.

My second concern? The comment Dr. Davis made about how, “…After
we prayed together, I looked into his eyes for the last time and told this
great leader that when I saw him next, in Heaven, I would testify that I
WAS FAITHFUL TO THE VISION…”

Faithful to the vision?

Here are two articles concerning “the vision” from Dr. Bright’s
perspective:

Dear friends:

As I write this, I am confined to my bed and am on supplemental oxygen
24 hours a day.

In October, 2002, I celebrated my 81st birthday. Approximately three
years ago, I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung
disease…the past two years have been among the most productive of
my life, as I have been able to keep a vigorous schedule of writing,
editing, producing teaching videos, some traveling and speaking, and
even the co-founding of the Global Pastors Network, a strategy to
help start 5 million house churches worldwide.

Sad state of American churches is ’scandal,’ Bill Bright tells SBC

Thursday, Jun 13, 2002
By Mark Kelly

ST. LOUIS (BP)–The sad state of America’s churches is one of the
great scandals of Christian history, and American Christians must repent,
live in the power of God’s spirit and pray for revival, Bill Bright told
messengers during the closing session of the Southern Baptist
Convention June 12 in St. Louis.

“One of the great scandals of the centuries is the condition of the church
of Christ in America today,” said Bright, founder of the worldwide
evangelistic organization Campus Crusade for Christ….

But Bright has not been content with those achievements. He is deeply
involved in the launch of a new project, the Global Pastors Network
(www.globalpastorsnetwork.org), which intends to train 5 million
lay pastors to start 5 million house churches around the world.

WHO’S IN CHARGE AROUND HERE?

You see, the current “Church model” with which America is so familiar
is simply NOT working and certainly isn’t the standard to which we
should aspire. Frankly, if it were a business, it would have filed
bankruptcy long ago. Sure, there are big churches like Pastor Sunday’s,
but as experience has shown us, if we cut off the spider’s head, it dies.
In contrast, there is no head to cut off where the starfish is concerned.
Chop of an appendage and it will grow into another fully-formed starfish.

I contend that we should embrace the many great things coming out of a
MegaChurch like Pastor Sunday’s, but we must resist the usual tendency
to rally around the charismatic personality or spiritual gifts of any
individual. Sadly, like the Jews of 1 Samuel 8, everybody seems to
actually WANT a leader other than God Himself.

Your thoughts?

Every blessing,

After spending many vacations in Cancun, Mexico, I decided to take the plunge and move there to study the beautiful nature I’d admired in my previous trips. Having lived many years in the comfort and safety of American suburbia, it was time for some adventure. After learning Spanish, I went to the Yucatan and rented a home in suburban Playa del Carmen and hired myself a maid. Then, with help from hired guides and friends, I visited a variety of remote places in the Mexican jungles. It was an unforgettable experience to see a variety of animals in their natural habitats.

The ever-growing city of Playa del Carmen is an hour south of Cancun, and easily accessed by public buses. Both cities are on the Caribbean Sea, where coral reefs abound up and down the coastline. The beauty of pure white, limestone sand, and richly colored, turquoise water of the ocean drew me down there. Being a nature artist, I was fascinated by the plants and animals of the region. Armed with my cameras, drawing paper and pens, I got to work drawing and photographing bugs, birds, plants and anything else exotic. Soon, my artwork landed me a job as main illustrator for a large nature park called XCaret.

Whenever I had a drawing to deliver to my employer, I would board the employee bus for XCaret, and then walk down a long, back jungle path next to the park to the office. These walks fascinated me, due to the path was directly next to fenced enclosures for their zoo and aviary. Flamingoes, spider monkeys and a harpy eagle were animals I could see the best from the path. One time I made the mistake of giving one of the monkeys a cookie, only to see the other monkeys chase after him to steal it, trying to beat him up! I quickly got out a couple more cookies and gave the rest to them, to avoid the original monkey from getting hurt. They all sat there munching peacefully as I snuck off, hoping nobody saw.

In Mexico, you will see iguanas in nature frequently. As I walked down the nature path on my way to work, there was rustling in the big tree near me. I looked up only to see a large, 6 foot green iguana male with bright orange fringe on his back, in the canopy of the tree. He looked down at me. I remember people telling me that iguanas are good eating, taste like chicken, and that they are called “chicken of the tree”. I never found out if that was true or not, but then, I wasn’t about to go eating iguanas. Nope, I’m not that adventurous in my dining choices. Black iguanas can be seen usually sitting one per rock pile. Everywhere there were rocks, were male iguanas sunning themselves. Interesting creatures. In Chankanaab Park (on the island of Cozumel) there is a huge iguana that walks around public areas, oblivious to the humans that walk past it. It will bite if petted, the park employee told me. So, I took photos of it and kept my distance.

Another lizard that was interesting and plentiful, was Basiliscus basiliscus, the basilisk. There are a few varieties of basilisk to be found in Mexico. It can run on water if it gets scared enough, and I witnessed it after scaring one unintentionally. Later, I found a smaller one and drew it for my job, they have intense eyes, looking very serious. When I was finished drawing him, he ran upright into the jungle, glad to be free of the big, scary human with whom he’d spent a few hours with.

The jungles of Mexico are fascinating, but I would never recommend walking off your path into one. First off, the foliage is very dense. Second, there are critters in there that can hurt you if provoked, namely scorpions, snakes and spiders. Look, but don’t touch. I have seen all of these, and have paid people to remove them from my home. Scorpions will come after you if they are agitated. Back away quickly, wherever they cannot follow. The lighter colored ones, I was told, are more dangerous than the black ones. There are tarantulas in Mexico, and they are big but not aggressive, thank goodness. I had a red-kneed tarantula taken away from the front of my door once. My maid used to throw out other spiders she found inside, and laugh when I would be freaked out by them. “This? It’s harmless!” she’d tell me. Yuck. I took her word for it.

As for snakes, there are a few that are reason enough not to go walking alone in the jungle. First, there are huge boa constrictors. My ex-husband was called by the ladies next door, to remove a 6-foot boa out of their rental flat. They said it just slithered into the open back door. Lesson learned, never leave an open door to your house if you live close to the jungle. Then, there is a crimson colored snake the locals called Coralio. I don’t know its scientific name, but it was beautiful but deadly. A man who lived near me had a whole apartment full of snakes, and he showed them to me up close. Snakes are interesting but it pays to watch where you step, since my ex and I nearly stepped on one during an evening walk. There are other snakes to watch out for, but these are the kinds that we saw. All snakes will mind their own business if unprovoked, it seems, trouble seems to be when humans aren’t paying attention and step on one by mistake. So, it pays to watch where you walk.

Then there were the amazing birds. A gorgeous variety of colors, shapes and sizes, birds in Mexico are exotic and fascinating. My favorites were the toco toucan, motmot, currasows, Yucatan jay, cinnamon-colored cuckoo, and pileated woodpecker and violaceous trogon (a relative of the resplendent quetzal). They had a knack for showing themselves whenever I didn’t have my camera with me. I did draw and take notes of what I saw, then look them up later. There was a bird that was so colorful that locals called it, “siete colores” (seven colors). After looking it up, I identified it as a painted bunting. Another bird locals call “pecho amarillo”(yellow breast), otherwise known as the great kiskadee, used to sit outside my window and yell, “Eeee, Eeee!” at the top of his lungs. We used to call back at him, and he’d answer. Very funny bird.

In Playa del Carmen, there is an outdoor aviary, built into the jungle, in the Playacar section. I went in there and walked around, to see the different birds that usually are hidden by jungle. One bird took a fancy to me, a barred currasow who followed me everywhere. She was my feathered tour guide, and posed for photos freely. I finally got to see a chachalaca up close, a relative to a turkey, that is shy, loud (its call sounds like a rusty meat grinder), and travels in groups. Also, there were red ibis, more flamingos, egrets, and much more. The aviary is a must see if you visit Playacar.

Another interesting natural sector in the Yucatan were all the bugs. Insects of every kind, in great quantities. I could’ve done without all the mosquitoes, though, thank goodness for bug repellent. My favorites were the butterflies. Sometimes when driving down remote roads, we came across undulating masses of various butterfiles colored yellow, white or black. Monarch butterflies also migrate in large groups down to Mexico, I saw them once, too. The most beautiful butterfly I came across in the wild, in my opinion, was the morpho butterfly. It has large irridescent blue wings, wasn’t as common as other butterflies, and preferred the privacy of non-populated areas like fields and jungles. There was another butterfly that was big, brown and with its wings closed, was the size of a large dinner plate. It was called an owl butterfly, and flew slowly. I got really close to him and he seemed unafraid. He had patterns on his wings that were like numbers. Fascinating.

Beetles. Ahh, beetles..not very graceful, and apparently not all that bright, but endearing with their less than graceful antics. There were golden scarab beetles that used to fly into my window as I was working, frequently. They usually landed on their backs with their feet flailing helplessly in the air. Eventually the situation would rely on me turning them right-side up, some would then fly off, others would somehow end up on their backs again. It was odd, but I took the opportunity to draw these metallically colored insects, who looked as if they were gilded in brushed gold.

Grasshoppers and katydids are in large quantity in the jungles of the Yucatan. There are so many varieties of grasshoppers, I lost count. As for katydids. their bodies are gigantic, the size of a sparrow. I caught one, to draw him, then when I let him go off my balcony, he flew away in a straight path. His big, green body was visible for a very long time as he flapped off into the sunset, it was surreal.

Sea creatures and fish are plentiful in the Caribbean Sea. Though the reefs are endangered and show signs of damage, they are still beautiful. Every day, I’d snorkel in the low-traffic area near my home. It was serene to get to the beach early in the morning, pick up a few shells that washed up on shore, then make my spot on the beach. I’d snorkel until my body got cold, every day. There weren’t many large predators in the areas I swam in, due to the breakwalls that run up and down the coast, separating the shores from the deeper, ocean water. Once in awhile, a barracuda would find its way into the reef area, my, what big teeth they have. Out there, you can see dolphins playing in the waves made by large yachts or ferries. Bottle-nosed dolphins are very social creatures and seem unafraid of humans. Some of the most memorable smaller fish and creatures I saw were brittle starfish (they live under rocks and will climb off your hand quickly if you try to hold one), octopus, conch, sea turtles, moray eels, blue tangs and of course, those feisty damselfish. Though I haven’t gotten my scuba license, I went on a few professional scuba tours where the water was so shallow, snorkeling was possible. Tours are great for finding gorgeous coral gardens that aren’t visible to everyone else. The prettiest ones I saw were near the town of Puerto Morelos.

Other places I liked to explore were the Cenotes Azul, and Dos Ojos. Cenotes are brackish water natural bodies of water that the Mayan indians used to build their villages around. Now, they sit in the jungle and tourists enter them to go cave diving. Underneath the Yucatan is an elaborate network of caves that attract cave-divers from all over the world. Not me, I preferred just swimming in the crystal clear water in the mouth of the cenotes, and observing the fish I saw. One of the cenotes had fish that I’d seen in pet stores back in the US, swimming there naturally. Jack Dempsey fish and green sailfin mollies, along with a kind of livebearer fish I didn’t recognise. They were very colorful, and the Dempseys, being combative cichlids who like to pick on one another, had tattered fins. But, all the fish were very healthy. What a wonder it is to swim among them in their natural habitat. The nature around cenotes is interesting, too. I saw a basilisk run across the water, when I swam too close to him, and a duck that would dive for fish and stay underwater for a long time. Nature abounds in and around cenotes.

The nature of Mexico is plentiful and beautiful in all its forms. The tropical, hot climate brings out flora and fauna unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my home state of Ohio, or even in my current state of Florida. Living among the lush jungles, hearing jungle frogs sing at night and spending time with my wonderful Mexican co-workers, guides and friends changed my life. By being respectful of nature (look, don’t touch) and watching where you walk, you will see clouds of butterflies, brilliantly colored birds, and animals like coatimundis, agoutis and others normally only seen in zoos. My employer promoted the preservation of Mexico’s wildlife, and it was my honor doing artwork of all things natural for them. I miss walking the jungle path to their office weekly and seeing the zoo animals, as well as the wild ones in the trees. If you love nature, make sure to visit Mexico and go on tours to see the beauty of the wild, but with professionals who know where to take you. It will be an experience you will appreciate and remember forever.

Recent statistics show that the Mobile Phone accessories market is growing larger every day. In fact the mobile phone accessories market has grown even more than the Mobile Phone Market. The general trend around the world is that most people buy a mobile phone and they use it for 1-3 years before they change it. Thus the mobile phone sector is growing at an arithmetic rate instead of an exponential rate. However the mobile accessories sector is growing at an exponential rate due to the fact that these Accessories are very cheap and many people buy several accessories each year for their phones.

One reason that accessories are so cheap is because of the fact that they are mostly made in China. Thus for just a couple of dollars, you can find variety of accessories ranging from phone covers to Bluetooth devices. This way, many people can buy new phone covers, Bluetooth headsets, new chargers, new batteries, new stereo headsets etc. So even though the consumer doesn’t change the phone, the consumer is able to use different accessories with their phones.

With the phone accessories, the most popular one seems to be the Bluetooth headsets. Many people like to be able to use their phone, without holding it or without taking it out of its case. In fact, a recent study by the Duke University shows that using your cell phone close to your head during the first initial few seconds of the call can increase your cranial temperature. Hence, if you have a Bluetooth headset, you can keep your cell phone safely in your pocket and you could speak more safely. Also another popular accessory is the car GSM set. In many countries around the world, it is against the law to use your cell phone while you are driving. Thus, with a portable GSM Phone Car Set, you can use your cell phone hands free with this accessory. It functions similar to the Bluetooth Accessory Headset, as it allows you to speak and listen to the conversation through your cars stereo system.

Of course, more simple accessories such as the desktop charger sets or extra batteries are selling in huge quantities. These are relatively very cheap products and many people just use them for convenience. But even the most avid consumer would definitely buy at least two different phone covers during the life time of the phone. Hence the sector continues to grow unimpeded every day with billions of dollars of phone accessories in the market waiting for their buyers.

Everyone knows the story of Alexander Graham Bell inventing the telephone.
There???s the story of Bell???s first words, ???Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see
you,??? that???s indelibly printed on our brains from childhood. However, what some
don???t know is that the telephone was developed in a similar form simultaneously
by Elisha Gray, who lost the patent battle by only a few hours in 1876.

Bell was successful primarily because he understood not only electricity and
the workings of the telegraph, but had a thorough understanding of acoustics,
which most inventors weren???t all that familiar with. While focusing on the
mechanics, they weren???t taking into account the unique qualities of sound that
made transmitting speech so much more complex than simple clicks of the
telegraph. With a background in music and acoustics, Bell could address these
issues more readily.

Chance happening plays role in acceptance

The telephone may not have gained such wide acceptance if, as if by
serendipity, the Centennial Exhibition hadn???t been scheduled in Philadelphia for
only a few months later. Tucked away at a small table in an obscure corner, Bell
did not hope to garner much attention until he drew the attention of the Emperor
Dom Pedro de Alcantara of Brazil, who was amazed by the invention. Immediately,
all the scientists in attendance were clamoring to study the new invention.

At first telephones were seen as a fad that were more for entertainment
purposes than commerce, until newspapers and banks began grudgingly using them
to convey information quickly by virtue of free phone installations. The
publicity from this made them immediately more popular and soon phone exchanges
were set up in most major cities.

In the 1880???s metallic circuits were developed that allowed for long distance
calls, which grew in popularity slowly because of the cost. Later, in the
1890???s, this was overcome by the development of the party line so that families,
especially in rural areas, could split the cost of a line.

Direct dial overcomes operator interference

Until 1891, calls were put through by exchange operators, but this was done
away with by a Kansas City man who invented the direct dial system because he
was paranoid enough to think that the operators were sending his business calls
to competitors. He was an undertaker.

In 1927, the first transatlantic call was made over radio waves. During both
World Wars, telephone advancements grew by leaps and bounds because of heavy
spending by the Defense Department. Innovations resulting from war-time
experiments included Bell Telephone???s first mobile telephone system, which
connected moving vehicles to landlines via radio. Surprisingly, this was as
early as 1946, a year that also saw the development of coaxial cables for major
transmission improvements with less interference.

In the 1960???s, telephones were so much a part of the landscape that Bell
Telephone could no longer continue to use the alpha-numeric codes for telephone
exchanges (remember using numbers like Normandy-7610?) and switched to longer,
all numeric numbers. At the same time, transatlantic cables were being laid to
accommodate the increased demand for intercontinental telephone communication.

One of the most important shifts in telephone history was the launch of the
first telephone satellite in July of 1962. TelStar was a joint venture between
Bell and NASA and revolutionized telephone communications like nothing that had
come before. Satellites in geosynchronous orbit could now be used for long
distance calls without the need for laying endless lines of cable and did away
with the problem of frequent cable damage and repair.

Fiber optics move sound at the speed of light

Fiber Optic Cables were first used for telephone transmission in 1977, when
both GTE and AT&T laid Fiber Optic lines in Chicago and Boston. By the
mid-1980???s, fiber optic cable was the preferred method of telephone
transmission, since it could carry a much higher volume of calls with much less
interference. Since it also carries information faster and farther and resists
lightning strikes, the advantages soon became obvious to the computer and other
industries as well.

When the United States government deregulated telephone service, AT&T, the
telephone communications giant, was immediately inundated with competition from
MCI, Sprint and hundreds of smaller local companies and soon fiber optic lines
were snaking around the country, being dropped along side natural rights of way
such as gas lines and railroads. Telephone costs dropped and a new telephone
service revolution had begun.

Cellular phones take the next step forward

In 1973, Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola Corporation made what was probably the
first cellular telephone call on a portable handset called the Dyna-Tac. After a
successful test run, he took it to New York to introduce the technology to the
public. By 1977, the cell phone had gone public, but these first models were
cumbersome and generally used by those who were used to keeping in touch by
two-way radio. By no means were they considered something that everyone should
have or even want. They were initially considered a replacement for the mobile
phones already in existence. The difference with cellular was the use of small
???cells??? for range of service in order to increase the capacity of calls handled,
dramatically increasing the number of calls capable of being made by
mobile/cellular phone at one time in one area.

The first cellular services used analog technology operating at 800 Megahertz
in a continuous wave. Over time, the power needs of callers increased and the
industry standard moved to a more reliable 1850 MHz with PCS. In 1988, the
Cellular Technology Industry Association was formed to develop guidelines for
cellular service providers and steer developments and improvements in the cell
phone industry. There are now well over 60 million cellular telephone customers,
a staggering number for a service that has been commercially available for only
thirty years.

Next stop, digital!

While the majority of users still have analog cell phones, the new frontier
is definitely digital. Rather than using a continuous wavelength for
transmission, digital chops up the wave into discreet bytes of information and
sends them in ???pulses??? of data. The up side to this is that digital signals tend
to be more secure when transmitted than analog. It???s also a more efficient use
of bandwidth and provides clearer, cleaner sound quality. If you transmit video
clips or photos (like with the new video or picture cell phones) digital is much
faster, and will be the choice hands-down when you???re integrating the cell phone
and the Internet.

There is a caveat; however, in that digital currently transmits through three
different technologies. This can lead to some problems with coverage. If you are
on a TDMA (time-division multiple access) system and traveling in an area that
has digital coverage that???s CDMA (code-division multiple access), you could run
into problems.

The answer for now is the combined analog-digital technology that providers
are touting. This offers the great coverage of analog when needed and the great
speed and quality of PCS/digital.

Telephone conferencing arrives on the scene

The first real ???audio conferencing??? could be said to have been the party
lines set up back in the early years of telephone use, although at that time the
advantages of a party line for multiple users weren???t grasped except a
s a way to
save money. In fact, the fact that several people in different locations could
pick up and talk on the line at the same time was considered a nuisance and was
actively discouraged as ???eavesdropping.???

When party lines were phased out, the idea of multiple conversations were
forgotten until businesses began seeking ways to carry on meetings via telephone
in order to save travel expenses and link teams together over distances. The
concept was revisited with new parameters; this time restrictions needed to be
in place, and the lines had to be open only when needed and desired.

Soon companies around the globe were offering to coordinate conference
calling for companies based on either flat rates, monthly fees or based on call
volume, with a trained operator setting up connections between each participant
on a dedicated line so that groups of up to ten could talk simultaneously. Their
bulk long-distance rates enabled them to pass savings along to their customers.

Telephone manufacturers like Polycom, AT&T and Panasonic also jumped on the
bandwagon, developing office telephone systems that enabled users to dial a
client, put them on hold then call up a third party and connect the three
callers into one conversation.

The Internet soon brought competition, however, to audio conferencing and the
cost of long distance telephone calls. Even with lower rates based on bulk
purchasing and group rates, Internet telephony is gaining ground on traditional
telephone audio conferencing because it???s so much cheaper.

VoIP, the Internet and the eventual demise of traditional telephone
conferencing

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) soon became popular for telephone
communications because it avoids the toll charges of standard telephone
connections. Dial-up internet connections provided near ???toll-quality??? voice
communications, and with broadband connections the increased data throughput
enabled businesses to use VoIP in conjunction with other Internet services like
data sharing and video conferencing. With the money saved using VoIP, it seems
obvious that using analog phone lines for telephone conferencing will soon be a
thing of the past.

Most VoIP audio conferencing technologies give you the capability to network
multiple groups or parties from different geographical locations, making it
simple to hold an international sales staff meeting. Web conferencing solutions
using VoIP from companies such as Voxwire, TTCGlobalTalk and VoiceCafe can
provide almost unlimited conference room seats for a meeting, limited only by
the bandwidth of the VoIP server.

As the Internet becomes a standard part of any suite of office equipment,
analog telephone services, audio conferencing and their equipment will soon
become obsolete. Audio conferencing will be done more and more on the Internet
using VoIP based web conferencing services offering powerful collaborative
services that go beyond just simple voice communications. For placing calls,
digital phone services like Vonage and Packet8 that implement VoIP over
broadband connections will step in to offer less expensive, more comprehensive
calling options to meet the needs of individuals and companies going into the
future.
